“These
are the proverbs of Solomon, David's son, king of Israel . The purpose of these
proverbs is to teach people wisdom and discipline, and to help them understand
wise sayings. Through these proverbs, people will receive instruction in
discipline, good conduct, and doing what is right, just, and fair. These
proverbs will make the simpleminded clever. They will give knowledge and
purpose to young people. Let those who are wise listen to these proverbs and
become even wiser. And let those who understand receive guidance by exploring
the depth of meaning in these proverbs, parables, wise sayings, and riddles.
Fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge. Only fools despise wisdom and
discipline.” (Proverbs
1:1-7).
Many Christians make it a
habit to read a chapter from the book of Proverbs every day, and thereby read
through the entire book of Proverbs once a month. I think this is a good
practice. Why? The book of Proverbs is a book of Wisdom. Most of them were
written by Solomon, the wisest man who ever walked the face of the Earth.
Proverbs is a simple, practical book that will help you to live a successful
life. Since I became a Christian, I have read through the book of Proverbs over
a dozen times, and I receive new insights every time I do. Allow me to share
with you just a few of the many benefits of reading through the Proverbs, and I
pray that this will motivate you to begin a journey through this book of wisdom
on your own.
THE PURPOSE OF THESE PROVERBS
IS:
1. To teach people wisdom and discipline,
good conduct, and doing what is right
2. To help them understand wise sayings,
and to make the simpleminded clever
3. To give knowledge and purpose to young
people, and make wise people wiser
These are all beneficial
things. Who wouldn’t want to be wiser? Who wouldn’t want more knowledge? And
who wouldn’t want more purpose and meaning in their life? All of these things
are offered by the book of Proverbs. Let me just share with you a few more of
the many blessings that you will find in this book of wisdom.
3:1-2 – how to have a long and
satisfying life (memorize God’s Word)
3:3-4 – how to find favour
with God and people (be loyal and kind)
3:7-8 – how to regain renewed
health and vitality (fear the Lord and turn your back on evil)
18:24 – how to make friends
(NKJV – be friendly)
If you’ve never read through
the book of Proverbs before, why don’t you start today and continue on until
you’ve read through the entire book? And remember, the most important part of
the process is not just reading the Proverbs. If you want to receive God’s
blessing, you need to be a doer of the Word. James 1:25 says, “But if you keep looking steadily into God's
perfect law – the law that sets you free – and if you do what it says and don't
forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.”
